Reem is a Jordanian/Palestinian junior majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Economics and Math. She’s very passionate about using data science for social impact, and she looks forward to further exploring this concept through the Arete fellowship. A fun fact about her is that she’s been playing volleyball for 6 years, and she’s part of NYUAD’s Intercollegiate volleyball team!

Anne is a Finnish-Mongolian Junior studying Economics, Applied mathematics and Finance. Through her studies and work experience in impact Venture Capital and Tech startups (including net impact quantification - ask her about it!), she is passionate about finding the intersection between finance and global impact and furthering educational and diversity mentorship initiatives. She is most likely to be found rolling on the mat in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, engaging in long conversations in hole-in-the-wall restaurants, or backpacking across the UAE's emirates.

Rebecca is a Taiwanese sophomore from NYUAD, majoring in Social Research and Public Policy. She is passionate about Entrepreneurship, Cross-strait relations, Philosophy, and Public policy. She is fascinated by the principle of identifying the root of the social problems and generating comprehensive solutions that help refine the social structure. Rebecca aspires to devote herself in fields relating to Social Entrepreneurship or B- Corp in the future. Fun facts about Rebecca are that she loves Karaoke, reading, dancing, exploring, eating, and having deep conversations. 

I’m a current sophomore studying Social Research and Public Policy. I am originally from Baltimore, USA but have spent time living in Jordan and Morocco as well. I am particularly interested in global health and food security, and the intersection of social issues with our health and wellbeing. I am pretty obsessed with podcasts, and I was introduced to effective altruism from a podcast featuring Peter Singer. I also love running, reading, travelling and trying new foods. 

Sneheel is a sophomore who comes from India, double majoring in Computer Science and Philosophy,  and minoring in Applied Maths. He is passionate about Chess, Table Tennis, learning more about the world, and trying to bring forth effective change. Fun fact: He often binge-reads Wikipedia article threads on random topics. Funnily, this was also how I was introduced to Effective Altruism and developed an interest in it.

Originally from the US, Hannah is a senior at NYU Abu Dhabi. She studies both Biology and Social Research & Public Policy, striving to work towards global public health at this intersection. Her passions surround anything connected to health and environmental justice-- especially about infectious diseases and single-use plastics. Happiest while outdoors, when she’s not in Abu Dhabi you’ll find her working on farms around the world, running long distances through the woods, or training for triathlons. 

Ahsen is a sophomore from India,  majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Maths at NYUAD. He is also passionate about Philosophy and international trade. You may spot him around campus playing table tennis or falling off his skateboard regularly. He looks forward to gaining a new, more effective outlook on life from this fellowship.

Gabriel is a sophomore at NYU Abu Dhabi looking to major in Mathematics. Originally from Southern California (United States), he is drawn to immigrant and refugee rights. He is passionate about law, culture, and individuality with an emphasis on how quantitative fields can impact qualitative factors of life; through effective altruism he hopes to learn how to apply his passions to improve the lives of others.

Malak is an Egyptian sophomore studying Electrical Engineering. She is very passionate about languages, social activism, and sports in general, especially swimming and badminton. She also enjoys discussing controversial topics, meeting new people, exploring new places, and going on adventures.

Emma is a South Korean Junior at NYU Abu Dhabi studying Philosophy with a minor in Economics. She loves legal research in all areas whether it be about immigration or country-specific company laws, and particularly enjoys learning how such laws are shaped and affected by individuals and vice versa. She takes every opportunity she can to travel, try new food, and discover new music and podcasts to listen to!

Joe is a Lebanese sophomore majoring in Biology on a pre-med track. He is interested in the political and social scene of the MENA region and is involved in movements against the patriarchal, sectarian system of his country in advocacy for women, LGBTQ, and refugee rights. He is always ready for any outdoor activity that includes discovering nature around him. 

Dana is a sophomore from the UAE,  majoring in Social Research and Public Policy and Psychology with a minor in Political Science.  She is an avid reader, and truly believes in the power it brings into advancing the collective wellbeing of the global society and the self by means of awareness, empathy, and initiative. Her interests are in educational and child development psychology, as well as learning to grow into self-love. 

Kiely (pronounced KAI-lee) studies Animal Studies as a graduate student in NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies, holding an undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley. As the Program Manager for Factory Farming Awareness Coalition’s Student Advocates program, Kiely is privileged to mentor young people who drive social change around animal ethics, environmental preservation, workers’ rights, and food justice. Outside of work and studies, Kiely enjoys dog-watching in Central Park.

Ethan is a current sophomore studying Economics but with interests across all ends of the academic spectrum. He loves analyzing policies to see what can do the most good the most efficiently - using data science to help people. You can sometimes find him wandering aimlessly and contemplating existential threats and other times trying new restaurants and venturing throughout Abu Dhabi. Through effective altruism he wants to engage his quantitative skills and see how they can be utilized to best help the most vulnerable people.

Ziyad is a sophomore from Egypt majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Mathematics and Interactive Media. He enjoys practicing problem solving algorithms and playing video games and table tennis. He also enjoys exposure to thought-provoking ideas about positions which are usually taken for granted and hopes to engage with such ideas through the Arete Fellowship.

Anna is a current sophomore majoring in Arab Crossroads Studies and minoring in Arabic Language, Political Science and Anthropology. Her academic interests revolve around topics connected to urban anthropology and study of society. She is passionate about photography, writing and traveling. Through participating in the Arete Fellowship she hopes to learn in more depth about the principles of effective altruism, especially when it comes to ensuring the long term future of our planet. 

Ilmah is a physics major at the American University of Sharjah. Besides her major, she  is passionate about intersectional feminism and the rights of south asian factory workers, as well as making education more accessible to Indian women. In her free time, she likes to listen to classical music, drink tea, and go to museums with friends.  Through the fellowship, she hopes to learn more about methodizing social work in a way that’s free of the saviour complex.
